Sorry for monopolizing the comments here...you've just asked a lot of good questions and Ryan invited me over. I'll shut up for a while after saying this:
Check out Miroslav Volf's "Exclusion and Embrace" and "Free of Charge". He is extrememly conversant w/ the postmodern academy, while at the same time offers extremely strong critiques of PoMo as an essentially bankrupt system of thought. Again, Volf doesn't speak for Emergent, but they are listening to him.
